In a randomized trial, atogepant was reported as a safe and effective prophylactic treatment for episodic migraine in patients who had failed two or more classes of oral preventive migraine treatments.
Episodic migraine is defined by the International Classification of Headache Disorders Third Edition as having fewer than 15 headache days per month. Preventive migraine therapy is recommended in patients with disabling migraine that occurs at least 2 days per month despite the use of acute medication. Conventional oral preventive medications from classes such as beta-blockers, calcium-channel blockers, antiepileptic drugs, and antidepressants display moderate efficacy against migraine, often with poor tolerability.
