Cervical infection with Chlamydia trachomatis during pregnancy can result in serious maternal and neonatal sequelae. The CDC recommends 7-day courses of erythromycin or amoxicillin for pregnant women and notes that 1 g of azithromycin given orally as a single dose "may be safe and effective." In this unblinded, randomized, controlled trial of 129 inner-city pregnant women who were infected with chlamydia, researchers compared amoxicillin (500 mg given orally 3 times daily for 7 days) with single-dose azithromycin. Partners also were referred for treatment. Tests of cure were scheduled for 4 weeks after initiation of treatment.
