Oral midazolam for pediatric sedation was initially administered as an ad hoc mixture of the IV preparation in a palatable vehicle, but an oral midazolam solution (Versed syrup) is now commercially available. These authors compared the commercial syrup with a mixture of IV midazolam solution and Syrpalta (a flavored 83%-sucrose solution) that was prepared to yield the same concentration of midazolam (2 mg/mL).
Fifty healthy pediatric surgical patients were randomized to receive 0.5 mg/kg of either oral formulation.
