New treatments for psoriasis are approved on the basis of studies that demonstrate efficacy — as measured by a 75% improvement versus placebo in the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score — for moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. Because such studies exclude patients with erythrodermic psoriasis, the most severe form of psoriasis vulgaris, data are lacking on the effectiveness and safety of innovative biologic agents for this potentially life-threatening disease.
