Volume loss in the brain and corresponding increases in ventricular size are well-established findings in schizophrenia, but they are not pathognomonic. To examine the overlap of these features in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, investigators compared magnetic resonance images optimized for gray–white matter differentiation from 173 patients with chronic schizophrenia (41 with schizophrenia spectrum disorders), 139 patients with chronic bipolar disorder, and 207 healthy controls.
