Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) have elevated risk for bleeding, perhaps from platelet dysfunction. Are these patients also more likely to have complications from bleeding peptic ulcers? To find out, investigators in Canada retrospectively reviewed records of 150 patients with bleeding peptic ulcers at two tertiary care centers.
Patients were divided into three groups: 50 ESRD patients receiving dialysis for >6 months were age matched with 50 chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients not requiring dialysis (serum creatinine levels >110 μmol/L for >6 months) and 50 patients with normal renal function (serum creatinine <110 μmol/L).
