Using calcium carbonate to fend off osteoporosis is common among women, as is hypothyroidism. In this prospective, manufacturer-supported study, researchers evaluated the effect of calcium carbonate consumption among 20 men and women who were on stable, long-term regimens of levothyroxine. After initial measurement of thyroid functions, each patient was given 1200 mg of calcium (as calcium carbonate) daily to be ingested with levothyroxine on an empty stomach. After 3 months, the calcium carbonate was stopped; thyroid function was remeasured then and 2 months later.
