Candida species are a frequent cause of health care–associated bloodstream infections. While C. albicans has been the most common culprit, recent studies have noted an increase in non–albicans species. Now, using a database that captures health care utilization and pharmacy activity from more than 1400 U.S. hospitals, CDC researchers have analyzed candidemia-associated hospitalizations among nearly 13,000 patients from 2016–2024.
The overall rate of candidemia was 47.1 per 100,000 hospitalizations.
In 2024, C. glabrata accounted for 34% of cases, overtaking C. albicans (32%).
In those isolates tested, 9% of C. glabrata were resistant to fluconazole, compared with 3% for C. albicans.
