Treatment of lower genital tract infections is a daily challenge for reproductive health clinicians. The authors of this prospective, double-blind trial, sponsored by the manufacturer of fluconazole, compared single and sequential fluconazole dosing for treatment of recurrent or severe candida vaginitis. Patients were enrolled if they had a vaginal pH of <4.5, positive wet preparation, and signs or symptoms of vaginitis. The definition of severe vaginitis was based on the severity of pruritus, erythema, edema, and excoriations or fissures; recurrent vaginitis was defined as 4 or more episodes in the previous year in patients with less severe infections.
