The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publishes treatment guidelines for sexually transmitted diseases every 3 to 5 years, most recently in early 2002. Because of dynamic changes in antimicrobial-resistance patterns, however, these recommendations may require modification before a new set of guidelines is published. Changes in gonococcal resistance in certain areas of the U.S. and the rest of the Asia-Pacific region have already prompted the CDC to change its treatment recommendations for gonorrhea.
