Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) can be effectively treated with a single injection of ceftriaxone and twice-daily doxycycline for 14 days. However, this regimen’s inconvenience to patients might result in decreased adherence. In this controlled equivalence trial, investigators randomized 133 patients (mean age, 29) presenting to an emergency department with a history of pelvic discomfort for less than 30 days, pelvic organ tenderness, and mucopurulent cervicitis to receive ceftriaxone (250 mg) followed by 2 weeks of either twice-daily doxycycline (100 mg) or once-weekly azithromycin (1 g).
