Chronic actinic dermatitis (CAD), otherwise known as the photosensitivity dermatitis/actinic reticuloid syndrome, is characterized by disabling photosensitivity to UVB, UVA, and, often, visible light. It is frequently associated with allergic contact dermatitis sensitive to multiple agents. Over time and to varying extents, patients improve, with sustained improvement dependent on continued careful avoidance of light and allergens. There have been no long-term studies of the natural history of this disease. In a study from a national Scottish photobiology unit with, perhaps, the largest body of CAD experience in the world, researchers attempted to determine the prognosis for patients with this condition.
