Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae was first reported in Southeast Asia in the 1980s, mainly causing liver abscesses, but has since emerged as a cause of severe infections worldwide. In a recent retrospective study, Korean researchers evaluated the role of K. pneumoniae and other pathogens in community-acquired meningitis among 247 patients from 17 hospitals from 2009 to 2023.
Streptococcus pneumoniae decreased as a causative pathogen over the observation period (from 2009–2013 to 2019–2023), from 36% to 19% of cases, whereas K. pneumoniae increased significantly from 7% to 29%, surpassing pneumococci and becoming the leading pathogen in 2019–2023.
