Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) are the most commonly performed bariatric surgical procedures (see ). To compare long-term outcomes of the two procedures, researchers conducted a meta-analysis comprising 51,000 patients from studies conducted between 2000 and 2024.
At 10 years, RYGB and SG yielded mean body–mass index reductions of 32% and 23% from baseline, respectively.
Weight loss was maintained for RYGB at 20 years; evidence for the effect of SG beyond 10 years was limited.
