Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) improves glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes who require intensive insulin regimens. In this multisite study, researchers explored the benefits of CGM in primary care patients who used less-intensive regimens with only basal insulin (1 or 2 doses of intermediate- or long-acting insulin daily without prandial insulin). One hundred seventy-five patients (mean age, 57; mean glycosylated hemoglobin [HbA1c], 9.1%) were assigned randomly to use CGM or regular blood glucose meters (BGM). Blinded CGM assessments were collected from BGM patients for study purposes; CGM participants could take BGM readings as needed, and both groups had regular educational and counseling visits.
