Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain, especially among runners. Although corticosteroid injection is used to alleviate plantar fasciitis pain, the evidence supporting this treatment is limited. In this blinded trial, Australian investigators determined the effectiveness of corticosteroid injection for plantar fasciitis.
Eighty-two people with plantar fasciitis were randomized to ultrasound-guided injection of the plantar fascia with either 1 mL of dexamethasone (4 mg/mL) or 1 mL of saline (placebo). The primary outcomes were pain (measured using a 0-100–point scale) and plantar fascia thickness (measured by ultrasound).
