Ovarian torsion is an uncommon, but serious, diagnosis in women who present with pelvic pain. Bimanual pelvic examination often is used to assess whether tenderness is adnexal or intraperitoneal, and this information is used to choose between computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound as the initial imaging modality. To examine the hypothesis that CT could rule out ovarian torsion, these authors reviewed preoperative CT findings in cases of surgically proven ovarian torsion at a single institution in Connecticut over 20 years.
Preoperative CT was performed in 55 of 167 patients with surgically proven torsion, and complete data were available for 28 patients. At least one ovarian abnormality was identified by CT in all 28 patients. Abnormalities…
