With the goal of further understanding facial fat distribution and how it is affected by age-related changes, investigators used computed tomography in combination with injectable dyes to illustrate the location of the facial fat compartments of four male and eight female cadavers.
The results were divided into two groups by age at death: six aged 54 to 75 years and six aged 75 to 104. They found a greater distance between the fat compartments and the infraorbital rim in the older group than in the younger. The older group also had larger sagittal dimensions in the lower part of the compartments and smaller dimensions in the higher part of the compartments than the younger group.
