Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) is a common condition in infants and is characterized by hypertrophy and thickening of the circular and longitudinal pylorus and obstruction of gastric outflow. Diagnosis often is established or supported by ultrasound (US), and infants with HPS are referred for surgical intervention. Current diagnostic criteria for HPS (pyloric muscle thickness, >4.0 mm; pyloric channel length, >15 mm) are derived from term infants who presented with HPS at age 4 to 6 weeks. To examine whether these criteria are appropriate for younger infants, investigators conducted a retrospective chart review of 314 patients (83% male) who underwent surgery for HPS between 2001 and 2006.
