Guidelines recommend that patients continue antidepressant treatment for 6 months to 2 years, and most studies show that relapse rates are higher with discontinuation than with continuation. Still, many patients can discontinue their antidepressant successfully, although the best method for discontinuation remains unclear. These researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 76 randomized trials in which investigators examined relapse rates with multiple methods of discontinuation in 17,000 patients who took antidepressants (mostly, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors).
