Bipolar depressions come in various forms, most often with syndromes manifesting psychomotor retardation. Clinicians who treat patients presenting in agitated-depressive phases must consider the likelihood of mixed states and other, more complex, bipolar syndromes. From 313 bipolar I patients who had presented with a depressive episode (index episode) to a single Italian hospital, researchers identified 61 patients with agitated depressions (19.5% of the sample). Characteristics and outcomes of these patients were compared with those of 122 bipolar I patients who had presented with nonagitated depression or mania. Follow-up lasted 5 years.
