Population studies from more than 50 years ago suggested that blood type A is associated with increased risk for gastric cancer and that blood type O is associated with increased risk for peptic ulcers. However, the studies had methodological problems.
To reexamine these potential associations, investigators linked data from blood banks in Sweden and Denmark with information from cancer and hospital registries in these countries to assess the occurrence of gastric cancer and peptic ulcers in >1 million blood donors. Among this cohort, gastric cancers were found in 688 patients during 12.6 million person-years, and peptic ulcers were found in 5667 patients during 10.4 million person-years.
