Despite growing interest in and use of alternative herbal medications in the U.S., especially for depression and anxiety, few randomized controlled trials have evaluated their efficacy. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, researchers examined the efficacy of 8 weeks of treatment with chamomile extract, a traditional herbal remedy with putative calming and relaxing effects. The 57 patients had at least mild generalized anxiety disorder (Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety [HAM-A] minimum baseline score, 9; mean, 15) and no major comorbidities, although minor depression was allowed. The placebo was masked with a drop of chamomile oil.
