Despite lack of trial evidence, caffeinated coffee is widely believed to be proarrhythmic. To test this belief, researchers conducted a multicenter randomized clinical trial involving 200 adults with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) or atrial flutter who underwent successful cardioversion and had a history of coffee consumption (see ). They assigned one group to consume at least 1 cup of caffeinated coffee per day, the other to abstain from all coffee (including decaffeinated) and caffeinated products and followed them for 6 months.
Baseline coffee intake was 7 cups/week in both groups.
During follow-up, coffee intake was 7 cups/week in the coffee-consumption group and 0 cups/week in the abstinence group.
