Traditional medicine has been unsuccessful in preventing recurrence of acute otitis media (AOM) in children. Increasingly, alternative and complementary medicine such as osteopathic manipulative treatment is being touted as adjuvant therapy for children with recurrent AOM. In a multicenter U.S. study, researchers randomized 57 children (age range, 6 months to 6 years) with recurrent AOM (defined as 3 episodes within 6 months or 4 within 12 months) to either routine care or routine care plus osteopathic manipulation.
