Otitis media is the most common pediatric infection. After symptoms resolve, affected children frequently have middle-ear fluid (effusion), resulting in some temporary loss of hearing. The benefit of treating effusion, whether with antibiotics, decongestants, or anti-inflammatory medications, has been controversial.
