Five percent to 28% of patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) retain the ability to walk. This mildly affected group has been excluded from most large, randomized therapeutic trials, making GBS treatment decisions somewhat arbitrary. These researchers performed a 2-year investigation of patients diagnosed with GBS at most hospitals in the Netherlands, gathering information on preceding infection, antiganglioside antibodies, and time-course of illness. Patients completed a questionnaire an average of 16 months after symptom onset. After patients with Miller-Fisher variant were excluded, 19 (14%) of the 139 patients were deemed mildly affected.
