In case-control studies, douching has been found to increase risk for pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). However, women who douche most regularly are those who also are at high risk for sexually transmitted infection (STI), thus confounding this association. In this multicenter, manufacturer-supported, yearlong field trial, researchers followed 1827 women (age range, 18-34) who had no current signs or symptoms of PID but who were at high risk for the condition because they had been treated within the past 6 months for bacterial STIs or bacterial vaginosis.
