Doxycycline is routinely used in the treatment of acne vulgaris, most often as a substitute for the more expensive antibiotic minocycline. Phototoxic eruptions from doxycycline are thought to be uncommon, although the incidence of phototoxicity has not been well documented. This retrospective analysis from the United Kingdom evaluated photosensitivity reactions in 106 acne patients treated with doxycycline over a 3-year period. The doxycycline dose was 150 mg per day in 30 patients and 200 mg per day in 76.
