Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) is one of several severe drug hypersensitivity syndromes. In a retrospective report from a single Taiwanese hospital, researchers described 60 hospitalized DRESS patients encountered during 10 years. DRESS was diagnosed when a drug reaction was suspected and three of the following criteria were present: acute skin eruption, lymphadenopathy, fever, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, lymphocytosis, or lymphopenia.
Patients presented an average of 21 days after starting their culprit drugs. All patients had rashes (usually diffuse exanthem), 63% had atypical lymphocytosis, and 52% had eosinophilia. Involvement of liver, kidney, or lung was noted in 80%, 40%, and 33%, respectively. The d…
