Sexual dysfunction is one of the most common and troubling side effects from selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), leading some patients to discontinue treatment. This study examined whether weekend "drug holidays" during treatment with SSRIs improved sexual functioning in 16 women and 14 men treated as outpatients.
The patients averaged 42 years old, were receiving SSRIs for depression, were in remission (Ham-D score of 10 or less), and reported SSRI-related orgasm failure severe enough to consider discontinuing the medication.
