Throughout his career as a pediatrician, Dr. Bauchner has been interested in health promotion and the contribution that parents make to clinical decision-making. He has conducted numerous clinical trials in the area of iron-deficiency anemia and overuse of oral antibiotics. He heads a large research group that studies health disparities, consequences of malnutrition, breast-feeding, effect of information technology on quality of care, cultural competency among health care professionals, medical errors, and gene-environment interactions. Dr. Bauchner wrote for NEJM Journal Watch General Medicine from 1999 through 2011 and served on the editorial board of NEJM Journal Watch Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine from its inception in 2002 until 2011.
