Psychotropic medications, including stimulants, are increasingly prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in preschool children (see Journal Watch Psychiatry Apr 1 2000). These researchers conducted a double-blind trial of low-dose methylphenidate (MPH; 0.3 mg/kg), high-dose MPH (0.6 mg/kg), and placebo among 36 children with ADHD (ages, 5 to 6 years; 89% male) who were enrolled in a 6-week summer treatment program that included daily academic classes, sports, and social activities. The children were randomized daily so that they received each treatment once or twice per week, and the researchers observed changes in social and academic functioning.
