Research has suggested that family-based treatment (FBT) in the home can avert hospitalization and might be superior to individual adolescent-focused psychotherapy (AFT) for adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN). These researchers randomized 121 outpatients with AN (ages 12–18) to FBT or AFT.
Both treatment modalities involved 24 hours of contact in 1 year. FBT focused on relieving parents of guilt for the disorder while assisting their efforts to help restore their child's weight; transitioning control to the child in an age-appropriate way; and establishing a healthy adolescent–parent relationship.
