To clarify the clinical characteristics of patients with post-traumatic cervical dystonia (CD), researchers asked 95 patients with CD to identify any events that might have precipitated their dystonia, examined the patients, and reviewed their medical records.
Sixteen patients reported injury during the 4 weeks preceding dystonia onset. These patients were significantly more likely than those without preceding trauma to exhibit laterocollis and to be depressed; they also reported more pain. Post-trauma patients showed a nonsignificant trend toward less use of sensory tricks (i.e., gestes antagonistes) and less response to botulinum toxin.
