Advances in ultrasound now allow us to pick up developmental anomalies earlier in gestation than ever before. However, many of these detected anomalies have unknown sequelae. The choroid plexus cyst, detected in up to 4% of second-trimester scans, is one example. This study from the University of Chicago followed all 89 women whose fetuses had such cysts diagnosed during a 5.5-year period (incidence, 1.1%).
The mean gestational age at diagnosis was 18.2 weeks, and cyst size averaged 5.9 mm. Cysts were bilateral in 67% of cases. The cyst resolved in 62 of the 63 fetuses followed with serial ultrasound.
