Fluconazole's role in treating tinea capitis has not been clearly established. In this manufacturer-supported study, investigators examined 61 children from Brazil, Canada, and South Africa with tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton violaceum (33 children), Trichophyton tonsurans (11), or Microsporum canis (17). All children were older than 6 months (mean age, 5 years), and 57 were black.
Moderate disease was most common (30 cases), but 13 cases were considered to be severe. Patients with trichophyton infection received fluconazole at 8 mg/kg once per week for8 weeks, and, if their disease did not clear, for an additional 4 weeks.
