In this industry-sponsored, randomized, double-blind, crossover trial, investigators assessed whether the anticonvulsant drug gabapentin is useful for treating chronic daily headache (defined as headaches that last longer than 4 hours per day on 15 or more days per month for at least 6 months).
Australian researchers enrolled 133 patients with chronic daily headache; 95 patients were evaluable. In most patients, headaches had characteristics of both migraine and tension headaches. Overusers of ergotamine or triptan drugs were excluded. After 4 weeks of observation to establish baseline patterns, patients received 8 weeks of either gabapentin (titrated up to 2400 mg daily) or placebo, and then 8 weeks of the other treatment.
