Surprisingly few controlled studies have tested the numerous compounds that have anecdotally been reported to improve antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction. In this double-blind trial from South Korea, 37 patients (mean age, 46; 27% female) with depressive or anxiety disorders and antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction were randomized to receive Ginkgo biloba extract or placebo.
Nearly all patients were taking SSRIs. Mean baseline anxiety and depression ratings were at the mild-to-moderate level. Mean duration of antidepressant treatment was roughly 1.5 years; mean duration of sexual dysfunction was about 1 year.
