Because glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists can delay gastric emptying, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has expressed concern that users might be at excess risk for aspiration of gastric contents during procedures that require sedation or general anesthesia (NEJM JW Gen Med Oct 15 2023 and J Diabetes Investig 2023; 14:767). In particular, attention has focused on patients who are undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
