Clinicians vary considerably in their approach to patients with glucocorticoid-induced adrenal insufficiency. The European Society of Endocrinology and the Endocrine Society (a global group based in Washington, DC) now have issued a joint guideline addressing this common clinical situation. In this summary, “steroid” is used interchangeably with “glucocorticoid.”
The following recommendations apply to cases in which steroid therapy can be tapered and stopped because the underlying disorder (for which steroids were prescribed) is now controlled.
