Green Tea Extract Is Useful for Local Treatment of Anogenital Warts

Warts were cleared completely in more than half the patients who used sinecatechin ointment.

External anogenital warts (condylomata acuminata), a manifestation of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. None of the topical therapies (e.g., imiquimod cream, podophyllotoxin cream, trichloroacetic acid) or surgical techniques in current use are ideal, and all are associated with painful side effects and recurrence. To determine the efficacy of topical sinecatechin ointment (Veregen) — an extract of green leaves of Camellia sinensis, composed mainly of tea polyphenols — investigators with manufacturer support conducted a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, phase III trial.
