Results from many population studies have suggested an increased risk for cardiovascular disease in patients with Helicobacter pylori infection; however, the nature and mechanism of this association are poorly understood. To examine the association between blood pressure and H. pylori infection, researchers analyzed data from a large community-based study of H. pylori eradication that involved 10,537 patients in Bristol, England.
Researchers compared 1633 H. pylori-infected study participants with 3267 uninfected participants. Unadjusted analysis indicated that both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were about 1 mm Hg higher in the H. pylori group (P < 0.03 for both).
