Although recurrences of genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections can be effectively suppressed with long-term antiviral therapy, the appropriate duration of suppressive therapy is unclear. Investigators at a research clinic in Seattle studied 664 men and women with genital HSV infection and followed them for two to more than nine years.
During the first two years of follow-up, patients had an average of five recurrences per year. Those with primary HSV infections at the time of study enrollment had, on average, one fewer recurrence in the second year of follow-up than in the first.
