Perineal group A streptococcal (GAS) dermatitis is a common infection in young children that usually presents with pain or pruritus of the perineum, vagina, penis, or perianal area. Amoxicillin is standard therapy, but reported recurrence rates are as high as 43%. In a retrospective study of 81 patients with positive perineal GAS cultures at a university hospital during a 2-year period, investigators evaluated the risk for recurrent infection.
Most patients (58%) were boys, and most (86%) had perianal involvement. The mean age was 4 years for both boys and girls.
