Each year since 1950, Myron Wegman has summarized U.S. vital statistics. Highlights for 1989 follow: -- Over 110,000 more babies were born in 1989 than in 1988, reflecting more women in childbearing years and a slightly higher birth rate. Birth rates continued to rise among teenage girls and unmarried white and black women. -- Eighteen percent more midwives attended births in hospitals, and 9 percent more attended home deliveries. -- Among whites, the proportion of low-birth-weight babies decreased from 5.7 percent in 1987 to 5.6 percent in 1988; among blacks, it increased from 12.7 percent to 13 percent over the same period. -- The median age of first marriage increased to 23.6 years for women and 25.3 years for men.
