Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is routinely used to treat lupus erythematosus. Its use during pregnancy has been associated with ophthalmologic and otic toxicity in the fetus and could result in increased fetal malformations or miscarriage. Experts suggest that risks to the fetus and neonate from HCQ exposure are inconsequential, but studies have been small and not controlled. These authors report a case-control comparison of 133 pregnancies in 90 women with connective tissue disorders taking HCQ and 70 pregnancies in 53 women with similar disorders not taking the drug.
