Cubist Pharmaceuticals warns that an impurity has been found in reconstituted daptomycin stored in ReadyMED elastomeric infusion pumps, made by Cardinal Health. Clinical implications are unclear, but the impurity — mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) — has been noted to cause dermal sensitivity in humans after cutaneous exposure and increased tumor risk in rodents after prolonged exposure. Daptomycin should not be used with ReadyMED elastomeric infusion pumps until this issue is addressed. No MBT has been identified in control samples or in samples from Eclipse elastomeric infusion pumps or other standard types of infusion systems that have been tested.
