Fashion has its price. With the dramatic increase in upper ear piercing, we can expect to encounter more patients with infections from these piercings, especially during warm weather months.
Investigators present two illustrative cases. A 14-year- old girl developed cellulitis after having her auricular cartilage pierced with a piercing gun. The infection progressed despite treatment with dicloxicillin and cephalexin. An abscess formed and both Pseudomonas aeruginosa and coagulase-negative staphylococci were cultured from the incision. In the second case, a 16-year- old girl developed a similar infection after piercing, but was initially treated with cefadroxil. Only P. aeruginosa was cultured from incision of the abscess.
