Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-induced bronchiolitis is frequently associated with transient wheezing in infants. Treatment with inhaled steroids has been proposed as a method to prevent recurrent wheeze by decreasing inflammatory reaction during acute infection, but use varies widely among countries. In the RSV Corticosteroid Study, 243 previously healthy infants younger than 13 months (52% male) who were admitted to 19 centers in the Netherlands were randomized to receive twice daily inhaled beclomethasone dipropionate (200 µg) or placebo (via metered-dose inhaler and spacer) starting within 24 hours of diagnosis of RSV infection and continuing for 3 months.
